Lesson 1: Rio De Verdade
I met the creator of this song, Tony Mariano, at a freestyle gathering in Rio de Janeiro. He was selling his 6-track CD for R$5. I wasn't expecting much from him, but I like to support the arts and the price tag was low enough.
The CD rested on my dresser for about two weeks unopened. One day, I dropped by afro pick behind the dresser and had to pull the dresser away from the wall, and this CD fell off and landed on my head. I took it as a sign and popped the CD into my computer to my listen.
Hands down...the sickest rap album I had heard all year.
In this song, "Rio de Verdade" ("The Real Rio"), Tony raps about the reality of Rio crime and police corruption that happens behind the picturesque beaches and festive samba parties. The beat and recording are amateur production, but the talent and authenticity is there.
In this unit, you will learn a couple lines of from this song. I encourage you to listen to it as often as possible, as his lyrical flow really emphasizes the natural flow of Brazilian Portuguese speech.
