Phonetic Notation Key
As a literate adult, you have a strong association between speech sound and speech script. These script-sound associations from your native language will interfere with your hearing and pronunciation of Portuguese sounds when you learn through writing. For this reason, The Flow of Portuguese uses a special writing system designed to minimize the chances of you mispronouncing the sounds. Below you will find a key for all the letters and symbols you will find in this program.
The Oral Vowels
These vowel letters will ALWAYS represent these vowel sounds
The Nasal Vowels

Remember that this list does not comprise all of the sounds of Portuguese, just the sounds that do not exist in English. For the sounds that DO exist in English, I use the English scripts. This way, you can minimize the pronunciation confusion without having to memorize a lot of special symbols.
Going through this list should have been a good review for you. As you go through the song lessons, however, you will rely very little on these scripts. In The Flow of Portuguese program, we only use these letters as guides to make sure we are hearing a sound correctly during the "Basics" phase of Rhythmic Phonetic Training. Once you are comfortable with the sound, the letters are removed so that you can focus purely on the sound during the construction and memorization phases. After all, language isn't about visual symbols, it's about sound.
To test your command of the Portuguese sound, you will record your first submission for review. Follow the instructions on the next page for recording and submitting.
