Basics
In this section, you will examine the component speech sounds and rhythm of the first four lines of verse 1 of "Desabafo." Be sure to pay close attention; the more comfortable you are with the separate acoustic elements of the lyric, the easier time you will have constructing and memorizing it.
- Play the entire audio once, focusing purely on listening without trying to mimic. Pay close attention to which syllables are "DA" and which are "di"
- Play the audio again and chant along with me. Do not move on until you can chant along with me without mistake for the entire recording.
- Once you can chant along with me without mistake, clap your own beat and chant the URB out loud to yourself 5 times without the audio aid.
- Confirm that you were chanting correctly by listening to the audio one more time.
Syllables
In the audio files below, I articulate each individual syllable of the lyric. Note that these syllables stretch across word boundaries, so if you are already familiar with Portuguese, you will need to fight the urge to think of words and focus instead on the syllables.
In case you are having trouble perceiving a particular sound, I have included phonetic respellings of each syllable. Click here to review the Phonetic Notation if you are unsure about a symbol.
